Paintball is a sport that has been gaining in popularity, especially among sports enthusiasts. It involves teams of people who have to capture the flag or eliminate opponents by being shot with paintballs. The balls are propelled at high speeds by means of CO2 tanks held under pressure inside the gun. The guns are similar to rifles and handguns but more intricate. They use various types of ammunition, including paintballs which are spherical gelatin capsules filled with mainly water-soluble dye, airsoft pellets, rubber pellets, Nerf balls or foam darts/arrows.

The game can be played on all sorts of terrains such as woods, prairies or deserts. There are different rules for each competition but generally speaking they involve two teams facing each other and taking it in turns to capture the flag or eliminate members of the opposing team.

The game can be played by people of all ages; however, there are safety guidelines that need to be followed when playing paintball.

Paintball originated in 1981 in New Hampshire when two friends called Hayes Noel and Bob Gurnsey came across a new brand of hunting experience which they named Survival Game. The idea was abandoned after a few years but it resurfaced after being reinvented by Hayes Noel with some help from Charles Gaines who had also been involved in Survival Game. They formed National Survival Game Inc., later known as National Paintball Association (NPA). The company launched its first official event in 1984 involving 15 teams from around New York.

Paintball started to gain popularity thanks to coverage on big networks such as MTV and ESPN. Games were even played at the X-Games. The sport is still growing in popularity worldwide, especially since 2005 when it became an Olympic discipline for under-18s only. Today, paintball is recognised by the Union Cycliste Internationale (International Cycling Union).
